There is no doubt that Osama Bin Laden was a murderous mind. Neither there is, that the organization he lead caused great pain and damage to peoples from all parts of the world. It is also a fact that watching the twin towers fall changed the view of the world. Families destroyed, a city devastated, the world breathless before an unthinkable act.
It is certain that Bin Laden did
not expect the Americans to wait and see whether he would perpetrate something
of the like again, or not. To feel save they had to stop him and they did. To
defend people from such an enemy is any leader’s promise and duty. It is true
that our liberal mind would have wanted him rather judged, - if not, what the
laws for? – But it is also true that he would not comply with that. Confrontation
led to his death. He was stopped. Joy is understandable.
But then… streets full of people
exalting, unconsciously and out of joy, the “eye for an eye” theory fuels
exactly what is being feared and may become very dangerous for the present and future
generations: A never-ending war, permanent hurt, hatred and fear. A newspaper
celebrating “vengeance” in its front page may not realize the message given on
how to compensate a loss. A massage heard by those who today hurt because of
this death. Exalting the “eye for an eye” theory may be a lousy business for
peace, home and abroad. Hatred grows only hate.
