The so called generation gap that takes place to every generation,
this time is drastic. Past generations had to deal with their children braking
frontiers set to them, but even so, their kids reproduced in a fair extent the parent’s
ways. The reason, educational structures were clearly closed and monitored.
Parents chose a school that reflected their believes and likes, kept their
children within their social frame, and let the duo home-school do the job.
Outside influences came late in life. Today´s cyber children and youth -
besides from the old educational duo - they have a single, shared, open,
crowded class- room: the web.
As any other innovative tool the web, as
it is now, has its pros and cons, it is beloved and feared but whatever the
case, it is already here, open and free, playing the most transcendent role the
world has recently seen: it is "educating" the present young
generation. Global as it is, it becomes a key asset for the world development, not so much for the speed and openness of its communication, but thanks to its
potential capacity to generate a global mind, a very much needed mind. At the root of the planet´s most intricate
problems lies isolation, division,
ignorance, and little knowledge. The historic trend in every nation has been a
tight closed inside sight. Nationals of every country are taught whatever it is
needed to know about their own and very little about their neighbors or the
rest of the world. The result is lack of understanding of other people´s
ways and reasons which is the midwife of all kind of confrontations.
Facing the web, the traditional educations system stresses technological knowledge over Humanities following the fact that technology is leading progress. Technology, indeed, has changed the course of history many times and it is doing it now, that is true. But a wider truth it is the fact that what has always been at the heart of evolution is a human creative mind. What matters is not the tool itself but the use a human mind gives to it. The wheel might have been just a round piece of art had not somebody put it to roll. Apples falling from trees were just a natural fact had not a human mind observed it with different eyes. Germs might have conquered the Human race had not a human mind developed tools to see them and encounter them. Evolution, progress always happens first in the mind. That is why freedom of thought has given born to multitude of creations. And a creative mind happens when it has the possibility to crossroad a good amount of varied information. There, in the web, all kind of information is available, flying free, so it is for the Education system and for web creators all over the world to guide the cyber minds - children and youth - into a global understanding of their home. "Second rate" subjects like geography, history, social organizations, religions, all those variables that define the variety of societies that inhabit Earth, far from being useless or less important, they become angular stones for the building of a global mind: a young generation that understands the world they live in, its functioning, its needs, and the peoples they share it with. Understanding breeds respect and respect sanctions peace, the most vital variable today´s children will need to handle tomorrow´s world./ March 20/2013- SDMM

SIEMPRE EN MI MENTE....
La así llamada brecha generacional que sucede a todas las generaciones, esta vez es drástica. Las pasadas generaciones tuvieron que lidiar con sus hijos rompiendo los límites que se les imponían, pero aun así, los hijos reproducían en gran medida los esquemas de los padres. La razón, las estructuras educativas eran cerradas y vigiladas. Los padres escogían un colegio que reflejara sus creencias y gustos, mantenían a los hijos dentro de su esquema social, y simplemente dejaban que el dúo casa-colegio hiciera el trabajo. Las influencias externas llegaban tarde en la vida. Los ciber-niños y jóvenes de hoy, además del tradicional dúo educativo, tienen un salón de clase abierto, compartido y multitudinario: la red.
Como cualquier otra herramienta innovadora, la red, tal y como existe ahora, tiene sus pros y sus contras, es adorada y temida, pero cualquiera sea el caso, aquí está, abierta y libre, jugando el papel más trascendental que el mundo haya visto en su historia reciente: está "educando" a la generación joven. Global como es, se convierte en una herramienta clave para el desarrollo del mundo entero, no tanto por la velocidad y apertura de sus comunicaciones, como por su potencial capacidad de generar una mente global, que tanto se necesita. En la raíz de los problemas más intrincados del planeta viven el aislamiento, las divisiones, la ignorancia y la falta de conocimientos. La tendencia histórica en todas las naciones ha sido una visión cerrada interna. Los nacionales de todos los países aprenden todo lo que se considera necesario sobre su propia gente e historia, pero casi nada sobre sus vecinos o el resto del mundo. El resultado es falta de comprensión generalizada sobre la forma de pensar y las razones de otros, ignorancia partera de toda clase de confrontaciones.
Enfrentados a la Red, los sistemas de educación tradicionales privilegian el conocimiento tecnológico sobre las Humanidades, dado que la tecnología lidera el progreso. La tecnología, de hecho, ha cambiado el curso de la historia muchas veces y lo está haciendo ahora, es verdad. Pero una verdad más amplia es que lo que ha estado siempre en el corazón de la evolución es una mente humana creativa. Lo que importa no es la herramienta en sí misma sino el uso que la mente humana hace de ella. La rueda pudo haberse quedado en una pieza de arte redonda de no ser porque alguien la puso a rodar. Manzanas cayendo de los árboles constituían un simple acto de la naturaleza hasta que una mente humana las observó con otra mirada. Los gérmenes quizás habrían conquistado la raza humana de no ser porque una mente humana desarrolló la herramienta para verlos y enfrentarlos. El progreso, la evolución, siempre sucede primero en la mente. Es la razón por la cual la libertad de pensamiento ha dado a luz multitud de creaciones. Y una mente creativa sucede cuando tiene la posibilidad de cruzar una buena cantidad de información variada. Aquí, en la Red, está disponible una inmensa cantidad de información, suelta, libre. Por lo tanto, es labor del sistema educativo tradicional y de los creadores de la Red en todas partes del mundo, orientar las mentes cibernéticas - los niños y jóvenes de hoy - hacia una comprensión global de su hogar. Materias "de segunda importancia" como la geografía, la historia, las formas de organización social, las religiones, todas las variables que definen a la variedad de sociedades que habitan la Tierra, lejos de ser materias inútiles o menos importantes, son piedra angular para la creación de una mente global: una generación que entienda el mundo en el que vive, su funcionamiento, sus necesidades y las personas con las que lo comparten. La comprensión produce respeto y el respeto sanciona la paz, la variable más importante que la generación joven de hoy necesitará para manejar este mundo mañana./ March 20/2013- SDMM
